Pen and Pencil to Paper
June 1st 2008 02:24
You know the name. Cross writing instruments are a well-known brand of elegant pens and pencils, which have been on the market a long time. The company, today A.T.Cross, began when a risk taker decided to invest his time and money to create a living for himself and his family, and provide a quality product to consumers. While maybe not a glamorous product, it is one used everyday around the world.
Richard Cross was an artisan when it came to crafting quality pens and pencils. So much so, he started a company that today is now a major player in the writing instrument industry. In 1846, he began his operations by making elegant crafted gold and silver casings for wooden pencils. Not long after that he began manufacturing, propel-repel mechanical pencils, a forerunner of mechanical pencils, and Stylographic pens, the forerunner of ballpoint pens.
Richard Cross then taught his son the art and craft of designing and manufacturing pens and pencils. The family sold the business in 1916. Today the original entrepreneurs name and commitment to craftsmanship are still an integral part of A.T.Cross Co.
It took one man's dream to start the process of what today is a major corporation, which provides benefit for its customers and its shareholders. Richard Cross was a risk taker, a pioneer, and a visionary in the business world of the 1800's. He was as vital to the economy of his time as entrepreneurs are today. He created employment then as entrepreneurs do today. Hat's off to the entrepreneurs who risked back then and continue to do so today.
